Frequently asked questions

I get asked all sorts of questions via email; the contact form or through the comments. I've therefore created a list of commonly asked questions - and answers -at http://cwh050.blogspot.com/p/faq.html. Please have a look at this page, your question may already have been answered there.

If you would like anything added to the FAQ page, please add a comment at the bottom of the page.

If you do post a comment, please remember that comments are moderated which means I have to approve them first. The reason for this is that I get a fair amount of comment spam so I need to sift through these beforehand. It means that there might be a few hours or days delay for your comment to appear and for me to reply.

Please don't include your email address in comments. If you do, and I approve it, you'll soon be the target of spam trawlers who'll endlessly spam you. So please beware.

The only other choice I have is to not approve your comment - which might make you think I don't like you or something.

I get spam comments so comments are moderated. It sometimes takes me a few days to get around to doing this do be patient 👣😀

  2. Hi Wayne,
Hope you are fine. I am facing a problem in DP4801 radio. when i program it and try to transmit. the receiving radio only shows Radio ID but no voice. Furthermore the transmitting radio can't generate PTT Talk Permit tone (i select analog and digital in Talk permit tone).
Both radios are having same issue....

    waiting for your reply.

    Regards

    1. Do both radios give a power-up tone when switched on? Is either radio paired with a Bluetooth device? Are either of these radios using Privacy (and the other not)? Do these radios work okay on an analogue channel (with CSQ)?

  3. Yes both radios giving power-up tone as well as working ok in analog mode (CSQ) but in digital mode or LCP mode having a problem. these radios are not paired with Bluetooth device and not using privacy.

    1. Are these radios on simplex when in digital mode? In LCP the radios are supposed to go through a repeater/system. Try using a default codeplug with just one simplex frequency in it - if it works here then there is a configuration problem in the radios.

Do you work for a Motorola dealer/distributor or are you a Motorola user/customer? Have you contacted technical support about this? See http://bit.ly/cwh050-faq

  4. Hi Wayne, I asked my dealer the question and so far they have not responded and I am getting a bit short of time to deliver a backup solution for my network.
Here's the scenario: 2 sites IPSC, site 1 HQ has a Dispatch console solution which I am trialing and in the process of procuring full licenses. I need to go live with the equipment but need to provide a dispatcher base radio for the control room to replace the existing Analogue setup. The dilema is: My Users are not technical and will not understand having to select a recipient before hitting the PTT. With a dispatcher console - it is easy to intercept all calls. How do I set up a Base radio (DM4400) to work through the repeater to answer all calls when a user just presses PTT. There is no way to set a default contact I can see and the nearest way is to setup a button to bring up preset recipient then for the user to hit the PTT. In an emergency situation with my users - I know they will not comprehend no matter how many practical training courses. To them, Radio is hitting the PTT and expecting a reply.I spent a long time making sure, Contacts, Groups and Users are correctly added and that there is a way for Private calls and SMS are available to all my users but I need to make sure that they can just hit the PTT and the default is the Control Radio in the Operations dept as the recipient.
    Any Ideas?

    1. Create a Talkgroup called dispatch. Put that Talkgroup on channel 1 of all radios. Program the dispatcher radio for that Talkgroup so that the dispatcher transmits on that Talkgroup by default: in the channel the contact is Talkgroup "dispatch" and the RX group list points to this entry too. This is covered in my YouTube videos on IPSC radio programming.

    2. If you're really really stuck, upload your codeplugs to https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B_c1Ryx3AZJyaXJ5U3hHdTlfUVU and I'll have a look this week.

  5. Hi Wayne, Thanks for a really fast answer. When you say "Talkgroup" - you actually mean Digital Contact group? I see Talkgroup mentioned everywhere but cannot see an actual "Talkgroup" heading in the CPS codeplug. I had already viewed your excellent YouTube videos and on the IPSC programming radios videos (pt 1 & 2) I see that you only use one slot. I wanted to use both slots so that other group or private calls would use either or both slots depending on activity. (I also have OTAP, GPS and ARS working but couldn't manage to force data onto slot 2 sucessfully or voice onto 1 - it all went to slot one and slot 2 was never used)
I will give it a try on one Portable, one mobile and the identified base radio and see how it performs especially when roaming to the other site.
Thanks for your support, I still have not heard from the Dealer but I suspect like most West European countries at this time of year... they are all on holiday.
