Some tips for provisioning ION and R7 via Wi-Fi
The MOTOTRBO ION and R7 both require a one-time online activation (regionalisation) before use or programming using CPS or RM. To support this, these radios come preconfigured with a default SSID and passkey, so all one needs to do; is to setup an enrollment Wi-Fi access point with the following credentials:
SSID: MOTOTRBO
WPA-2 Passkey: Radio Management
WPA-2 Passkey: Radio Management
Having an access point, with known credentials, connected to your home/work network is a security risk so I strongly suggest you seperate the above enrollment network from the rest of your network. Also when setting up the radio, you should also replace the above SSID and passkey with one of your own choosing - or simply delete it if you plan to never use Wi-Fi again for anything.
Additionally, if your access point or router supports access control, I recommend that you limit access to the following sites; protocols and port numbers, that way this network doesn't become a free-for-all:
Its also a good idea to set up the DHCP server for the above network to have a very short lease time (maximum 30 minutes). If you expect to provision more than 253 radios at the same time, I would also suggest increasing the size of the subnet and DHCP pool.
IP address: 192.168.0.0/24
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
DHCP range 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254
Maximum 253 concurrent clients (radios).
IP address: 192.168.0.0/23
Subnet mask: 255.255.254.0
DHCP range 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.1.254
Maximum 509 concurrent clients (radios).
Remember that with the R7, this is a once-off only activation. Once activated, the radio can be programmed using CPS or RM without ever getting a sniff of the internet again. The radio can optionally be delivered in a pre-activated state. No Radio Central login is required to activate a R7.
The real-time clock can also be synchronised from GNSS (GPS), so once activated, using NTP is optional.
For more information on the above, refer to Motorola documents MN007868A01 and MN008921A01.
*The ION can only be configured using Radio Central at this time...
