Backlight

Display model radios have a LCD screen that is backlit by several LEDs. On portables, it is possible to configure how the backlight operates.

To save battery power, one can configure the Backlight such that the display backlight stays off as much as possible. Un-ticking both On Receiving Over-the-Air Event and On User Event will make the backlight stay off under almost all conditions.

On Receiving Over-the-Air Event means that the backlight will come on every time the radio receives a call allowing the user to see who (i.e. the ID and group) is talking.

If backlighting is needed, you might also want to turn the Timeout Timer down, so that the backlight turns off sooner after a button has been pressed or something is received (the lowest is 5s).
