How I do reset factory for DM4601e? (sic)

The above question came in via my contact form the other day.

MOTOTRBO radios are not consumer devices and so there is no such thing as a factory reset or some secret key combination. Instead, there is a device recovery process whereby all the configuration data is overwritten. Device recovery removes everything so the radio (or repeater) will need to be reprogrammed from scratch.

To carry out a device recovery, you will need:
  • The radio.
  • The programming cable for that radio.
  • A reliable source of power for that radio (known good and charged battery or UPS).
  • The latest CPS (or at least a version of CPS will work with that radio).
  • The firmware package package for that radio of the same version (ideally) or newer.
  • A Windows computer on which the CPS and firmware package have been installed.

NB! Device recovery has the potential to make the radio inoperable therefore it is important that both the radio and computer remain powered during the process - which can take 2-3 minutes. DO NOT power down the radio or disconnect it from the PC while until Recovery Complete is shown! To be safe, the computer should not be used to carry out memory intensive tasks while this is happening. Make sure the hibernate feature is either turned off or set to a very high value.

The process is as follows:
  1. If you haven't already, start by installing the firmware package.
  2. Start the CPS.
  3. Connect the radio and power it on.
  4. In the CPS, click on Device and then Recover.
  5. If everything is okay, a popup will appear showing some details of the connected radio.
  6. From the list, click on the Firmware Version drop-down and select the package version for this radio. There should be only one listed.
  7. Click on OK.
  8. A progress bar will appear showing how far the process is.
  9. Towards the end, the radio will reset. This is normal. Do not disconnect or do anything on the radio.
  10. The progress bar will disappear and another popup will appear saying Recovery Complete.

The radio can now be programmed and used as normal.

Device recovery will also erase any premium features. This is not a problem, they can be easily recovered. Just click on Licences and Recover Device Licences. At this point, your PC needs to be connected to the internet since the CPS will contact the licencing server to determine which licences were on that radio. Once you've done this, write your codeplug to the radio and the features will get added once more.
