Like its predecessor, the R2 is also available as an analogue-only model variant that can be upgraded to support digital operation. This model would be of interest to customers who don't need DMR quite yet.

Upgrading to digital is done in the same way as it was done on the DP1400:

1. Make sure the radio has a fresh/charged battery on it.

2. If needed, download and install the current* or latest firmware for the R2.

3. Purchase the above feature licence.

4. Register the feature it using CPS or RM (remember to authenticate).

5. Activate the feature. The CPS will prompt you to perform an upgrade. Carry out the upgrade.

6. Once the upgrade is complete, continue to configure the radio for digital operation

 

Do not purchase HKVN4204A, this licence is for the DP1400 only.

The software upgrade is needed to add in the part of the code that handles the AMBE+2 vocoder.

When I say current, I mean the version of firmware that is in the radio. If you use a later version, the upgrade may take a bit longer since other things are being added/changed. At the time of writing this (August 2023), the latest firmware version for the R2 is R02.23.01.1002.

In South America, as far as I can tell, the part number to use is HKVN4032A; in North America it's HKVN4332A and in Asia (except 🇦🇺 and 🇳🇿) use 82012023001.
